                        2021 Koi Show Judges

    Garry Chin

I hail from Sacramento, California, and I am an AKCA Senior Judge, an AKJA Senior Judge and a ZNA Local Certified Judge.  I became a Koi Judge to “give back to the koi hobby” what I have learned from koi dealers, koi breeders and advanced koi hobbyists.  I first officially got into koi judging in 1998 and in 2000 became an AKCA Certified Judge.  I have judged Koi Shows from the west coast to the east coast, from shows having a handful of koi entries to the largest English-style Koi Shows in America. My wife, Marilyn, and I have made trips to Japan on koi shopping trips to koi breeders to buy koi and attend the All Japan Koi Shows.  Through the years, I have been involved with koi in a number of ways such as Koi Show Chair, Koi Club Advisor, Executive Director of an (AKCA) Associated Koi Clubs of America Seminar, Producer of the Koi of the Year contest for Associated Koi Clubs of America, and numerous Koi Show ring activities.

I was a Top Gun in the Information Technology world having just retired after forty years. I also have a Bachelor of Science degree from San Jose State University.  Away from work my club affiliations include being a member and past-President of the Camellia Koi Club, as well as a member and current Vice-President of the Northern California Chapter of ZNA.  I was also a member of the Mid-Atlantic Koi Club Chapter of ZNA.

Prior to retiring, I would be one who said “Where did I find time to work as I am so busy now!”.  I am currently doing the following: serving as President of the Sierra Foothills Rose Society and is Chairing the Northern California Nevada-Hawaii District Virtual Conference, serving as Vice-President of the above ZNA Chapter (NorCal), working on developing the ZNA America National Championship, committee member of the American Koi Judges Association, and the host of numerous video conferences on Zoom. My wife and I also are sponsors of the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, a youth group in the marching arts.

I am looking forward to participating in the 19th Annual Northern Midwest ZNA Koi Show and Pond Expo and adding to its rich history.

AKCA Certified Koi Judge,
ZNA Local Certified Koi Judge

I am originally from Hayward, CA where my Dad was an original member of the first koi club in America the Golden Gate Carp Society.  I first attended the first koi show in 1972 and have been hooked on koi ever since.  I am triple certified and formed the ZNA Carolina Koi Chapter.  I have been fortunate to have won many awards including the last NC Koi and Watergarden Show where I had the Grand Champion, Reserve Champion, Mature Champion and Adult Champion. I am honored to be able to meet koi kichi from all over the world and love to teach about koi.  The best part about keeping koi is the wonderful friends you meet.  I am Married to the most wonderful woman Mary Ann who supports my koi hobby and my daughter Haley already has an excellent eye in selecting her koi.
